Tom,

I wouldn't say the TX audio is "really bad," but it's not as good as the 
TS-2000's audio.  You can improve it somewhat with the right microphone, or 
by using an external equalizer such as those made by W2IHY.  That said, I 
think the 480's audio is probably as good as that of the Icom radios you 
mentioned.
