Hi Robert,
I've run in to this problem before and that's why I've started using 
toslink, optical, cables.  One nice thing about the optical connection is 
that it supports up to eight channels so you don't have to worry about which 
cable goes where or the colors of the cables and jacks.  And no hum at all!
