The question would be, where did the gunk come from.  It may be your pinch 
roller coming apart.  I use to buy stuff from my parts supplier called 
regrip.  It was made just for cleaning and librucating rubber drive wheels 
and such.  I don't know if it is still available or not, but check with a 
electronic supply place.
