Why this antenna rather than other verticals?

I have an R8 mounted on a pole to brackets on a garage wall.

It isn't really a counterpoise in the classic sense but rather a capacity 
hat (except it is on the bottom).  I have mine mounted on a ten foot 
section of heavy walled masting, which is fastened to the tilt over base 
that GAP sells.  That base works extremely well, provided that you dig a 
good hole and mount it in about four of the 80 lb. bags of concrete.

Mine has been severly tested--it went through all three rounds of severe 
thunderstorms that we had last week and stayed up, which makes it decidedly 
more rugged than some of the trees around here!

I think the GAP can be a very reliable antenna if you mount it properly, 
but it pays to over engineer it and try to make it as bomb proof as
possible.
