When you install your linux distro of choice it will give you the option
to use the entire drive, tell it to use the new slave and it will
partition and format the drive for you. During the install you will be
asked to install a bootlader. Install grub to the MBR. The best for the
first disk it to create a new partition fat32 and put whatever you want
on it and you can mount the drive in linux.
