What burning software are you using on his machine to do this operation
with? There might be an incompatibility between the hardware and whatever
application you are using. Another thought is a dirty, misaligned, or
malfunctioning laser assembly in the drive that is giving you issues. In
either case, swapping the drive for a known good seemed to "fix" your
problem, so replacing the drive in question might be just what the doctor
ordered. Yet another thought that occured to me is the media you are using
to burn data to. It may pay in the long run to spend a buck or two extra per
pack of discs to get quality media that won't fail as often. I use Memorex
almost exclusively with no coasters, but your milage may vary. Find a brand
that your drive will digest with a minimum of errors and happy burning.
P.S.: More RAM in your machine never hurts. XP is fairly piggish on memory,
and Vista is even more so, if you decide to upgrade down the road.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Burner no burning
Hello Listers,
I have been trying to help a friend figure out a problem, which has me
puzzled as well.
Here's the scenario:
He bought a new Sony DVD+RW Burner, when he tries to burn a CD it will
burn all the way up to 97% and then give an error message saying that he
needs to clean the disk or try other media; he has done both things. We
went back to Windows Media Player 10 from WMP 11 with the same results.
I then took the drive out of his computer, put it in mine and had
absolutely no problems burning a CD. Everything functioned as it should
have. So I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas as to what may
be causing the drive not to burn on his rig.
His system: Biostar motherboard, 768mb of RAM, AMD 2Ghz processor, and
Windows XP Home.
Hopefully, someone will have an idea of how we can correct this
problem. Anyways, thanks in advance.
Donnie
