Incidentally the radio won't take any mike I hook to it. I have a few turner
mikes, some old estatic mikes that aren't made anymore, and the old school
silver eagle. The icom didn't like any of those. That's asahame since I miss
using those mikes.

Oh yeah, if the SM-8 won't drive it it must be out of adjustment, that's a
normally hard driving mic. Not an overly bad radio but I'd be careful
getting it fixed, I see those sold all the time for under $400 in great
shape. It might not be worth a lot to fix it though just putting it back in
adjustment probably won't be too bad for you.
