I found some Uniden 23 channel radios from Wall mart which were on sale
for just under 18.00 dollars. I will get 2 more for the kids and
another 2 more of the 2008 for my wife and I.

They worked fine on 30 acres of camp ground this weekend.

i have the Icom 2008a. They are FRS radios, but have many of the same
features as ham or GMRS handhelds, including the ability to encode and
decode CTCSS tones. They give good audible feedback for the controls. I
have had them for a while, so do not recall the price. I got them from
C. Crane Company, 1 800 522-8863.
