One footnote on radio programming software and JAWS.

I am finding that many of the proggraming software packages that worked 
with earlier versions of JAWS are not working well with 8.0 and 9.0 
versions of JAWS.  The fault is the radio manufacturers who are using out 
of date techniques for writing software.  The problem is that most of these 
packages are written as 16 bit applications so that you can run them on 
anything from Windows 3.1 on up to current versions of 
Windows.  Unfortunately, what I am finding is that the newer versions of 
JAWS are not supporting 16-bit applications well, and you can't really 
fault Freedom Scientific for that as we have had 32 bit applications since 
Windows 95GB.  It's not reasonable to expect them to support the ancient stuff.

After telling everyone how well the Kenwood MCP2000 program works with JAWS 
I discovered two nights aago that it doesn't work very well with either 
JAWS 8.0 or 9.0 Beta.  I had to launch JAWS 6.20 before I could go in and 
reprogram the radio.  The good thing is that Freedom Scientific archives 
old versions of JAWS on their web site going back to the days of Windows 
3.1, so it isn't too difficult to get a version on your computer that will 
work with these programs, but if you haven't used this stuff for a while, 
don't be surprised if it doesn't work with the new screen readers.
