your idea should work.  I have taken your garden variety computer 
headset mic and built an adapter box to use it with anything wired 
for the kenwood 8 pin mic connnector.
I have used it on both my kenwood ts2000 and the elecraft k2.  Audio 
reports cannot tell the difference between the headset and the mc43 microphone.
As for power, see, the ht's mic jack may be powered.
