Hi Tom,
I really think that the first thing that you need to do is go to your start 
menu, accessories and in that menu look for system tools.  Within system 
tools you will find both disk cleanup and defrag.  My philosophy has always 
been keep it simple and complicate things only when necessary.  If that 
doesn't work, then you can get in  to the guts of your registry and really 
clean it out, but first things first.  That can save a lot of unnecessary 
work and sleepless nights.
