There are lots of manufactures who imitate the "Ham Stick" design, I guess
there are some designs that have the coil protected in such a way as to
prevent you from feeling it. The genuine "Ham Stick" design wraps the coil
on the outside of the fiberglass mast and the whole mast is wrapped in
shrink tubing so that you can feel the coil. The 10 and 6 meter ham sticks
don't really have a coil because they don't need one, but you can still
feel the wire going from top to bottom. You should be ok if you don't
slide the stinger into the mast more than 4 inches.

My ham sticks don't have any
wire that is detectable except for the stinger at the very top but that
isn't a coil.
