That's extremely useful to hear your description of skype. I tried it
out a year or two ago, but could not get the video to work. There have
undoubtedly been improvements in the skype system since then. I'll have
to try it out again. Any tips for getting started with skype?

Here's part of the presentation I gave at the annual conference of the
American Association for History and Computing in Providence last month:

I've been using FlashMeeting

http://flashmeeting.open.ac.uk/

privately with clients, and publically with my online conferences

http://historichomeworks.com/hhw/conf/vidconf.htm

Flashmeeting (FM) does not require installation of a program (but does
require the nearly ubitquitous "Flash"), and it is a simple one or two
clicks for a new user to get into a FlashMeeting. FM allows up to 20
participants and has a "wait your turn to talk" feature,

http://historichomeworks.com/hhw/conf/flashmeetingmain.jpg

records the sessions in which you can link to individual segments, a
whiteboard you can upload photos to and mark up then save and printout
the marked up photo, etc. To see a sample FlashBoard set your browser to
allow popups, go here:

http://flashmeeting.open.ac.uk/fm/memo.php?pwd=387f70-6133

and click on the "Open Snaps" button over on the right edge of the
display. Try printing it out if you like, buy clicking on the "Print"
button along the lower edge.

Of course, as you did, you can simply turn your camera to sketch in your
video broadcast, as I did in explaining to a client how to attach a
porch hand railing to the side of a column:

http://flashmeeting.open.ac.uk/fm/memo.php?pwd=0f3ad1-5717&jt=00:27:51

or showing a group of tradespeople a craft technique, such as window
putty tooling:

On the downside, with FM you do have to "book" a session and make an
appointment with your contacts, but typically sessions can be booked at
a moment's notice. Also, FM is provided for free use to the public on
the "open knowledge" philosophy, so recordings and sessions are not
"private" and may be used for analysis in the development of the FM
system, although you do not have to make the recording available to the
public, you can. The public can use the FM system at the Open
University's OpenLearn LabSpace:

http://labspace.open.ac.uk/

where you can register (upper right of the page) and then learn about
and use FlashMeeting (lower left of the page).

My next public FlashMeeting is Tuesday, 6:00pm EST, feel free to join us at:
