Linda,
Thanks for posting this! Part of the reason I posted is that I haven't
heard from you in awhile, and wondered how you and Case (and the rest of the
family) are doing. I was at a conferernce the first of the month and met a
guy in the disability studies department at UH-Manoa. He's done some
interesting work on helping people with disabilities "tell their story," and
how that defines and influences culture.
As Deri said, sometimes one wife is too many (and I'm sure Janet would say
the same about husbands, probably more often). With what's now known about
the effects of intermarriage from a biological standpoint, it's
indefensible. From the standpoint of economic and social subjugation
(playing the devil's advocate), I
wonder if some of those effects would be mitigated if it were more openly
practiced.
As polygamy is currently practiced, I am against it, and can't envision it
becoming something that could become innocuous from an abuse standpoint.
What I guess those who argue in favor of multiple spouses might envision is
the "communal" lifestyle of the late sixties, but that generally didn't
work either, for many of the same reasons you mention.
Be well; I enjoy discussing things with you, and now that the elections are
over, it was time to find a new controversal thread! ;-{)}
