What you need to do, and I'm not sure if it is given, but check the
specs. My Kenwood commercial repeater, for example, is rated at 25
watts for 50% duty cycle. This is fine for commercial stuff, but on i r
l p or a long q s o, it exceeds that. After I blew one $80 final, I cut
the power back to ten. I also put a fan on it just for added safety.
Engineers these days seem to design solid state stuff to run much hotter
than I like. If I can't hold my finger on the heat sink for ten seconds
or so without it getting uncomfortable, for me that is too warm.
