Hey robert:
GPS and ham together equals APRS.
This is amateur position reporting system or something similar to that.
It uses a gps receiver and sends info from the receiver to a radio which
then transmits the data on a frequency.
Others who are listening to that frequency can decode the data and find out
where the person who just sent the data is located.
They also use repeaters for this system, and there are internet websites
that track data transmisions in certain areas and post the results onto a
map of the region.
I believe with the use of a laptop one can also send text messages via this
system.
However, beyond that, it really isn't useful as far as a navigation tool.
Its more of a vehicle tracking tool then anything.
The trecker will give you all the audible information you need regarding
your surroundings and where you are physically located bassed on the info
received from satelites. APRS won't do that.
