Well, I can see how much you've actually *used* Elecraft gear (as
opposed to just making assumptions about it). As it happens, the K2's
receiver, single conversion that it is, is really pretty hot. It's no
accident that several DXpeditions have used K2's in their
operations. I haven't had a single problem with mine: no overload, no
funky images, nothing, in short, but brilliant performance on cw and
on SSB. But since you've asked, no, the K3 is a dual conversion
receiver with IF-level DSP.

As for "paying too much", I guess it depends on what's important to
you. If you want raw performance in the ham bands on par with more
expensive radios (look at the ARRL lab measurements), you can't beat
the K2 at its price. If you want lots of bells and whistles with some
performance compromises, by all means, pay less. I'm confident that
the K3 will give anything comparably priced a real run for its money.

It's no accident that you don't see lots ofK2's for sale. When you
*do* see them for sale, often as not the person selling buys another
one...so...they can't be too bad. I expect similar, or better, results
from the K3.

BTW, the KX1, for its size and feature set, is just as wonderful in
its own different way. I had a blast with it in Ukraine. Think I
could've easily carried a full-sized rig with me in a place that it
was imperative to travel light because you could be moving real soon
and at short notice, in cramped quarters? Nope...the KX1 fit that bill
perfectly!
