Tom,

You should probably check the configuration of COM1.  Go to Control Panel, 
System, and tab to Device Manager.  You'll see a tree view of everything on 
your computer, so you should look for ports.  Under Ports, you'll find a 
list of all of them, so select COM1 and press Alt-Enter to bring up the 
properties.  The port should be set to 1200 BPS, 8 data bits, no parity, and 
software handshake (x-on/x-off).  If this doesn't fix the problem, you'll 
have to find out if the port is configured as a null modem, but hopefully, 
you won't have to go that far.  Have fun.
