Vital, moving My Documents is fine, if you do it the way I suggested to keep all the OS and application linkages to it correct - that's YOUR data. Moving any other "user" data where the application itself allows you to select your storage folder is also fine.
I would definitely NOT move anything that is entertwined with the Windows OS, which "Documents and Settings" certainly is. It needs to be kept with the OS - especially if you ever consider drive imaging in the future. It's best to move nothing off the C-drive/partition, besides My Documents, unless it is done THROUGH an application that offers application-maintained folder relocation, such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Office.
Unless you know what you are doing, leave the registry alone. A tiny mistake could cause you big problems.
There is a little free program called ERUNT that will backup your registry in a few seconds to a folder that you can access from Windows Recovery Console (or anywhere else you tell it to store the backups. You can put the date in the filename and keep as many as you like. You can even have it make a new backup once a day automatically, keeping, say 5 or 10. A free companion program called NTREGOPT is good for physically optimizing the registry files (a registry defragger). CCleaner is free and helps keep your PC cleaned up. Eusing Free Registry Cleaner cleans the bad stuff out of your registry (then you can defrag it with NTREGOPT). All these programs have been in use many years, without modifications or new versions, and are quite safe - you can trust what they tell you. --AnnaSummers
