Harold, thanks, but turning off restore did not work.

However, I think that you hit the nail on the head with Ad Watch. It has a
setting to "lock start-up section," which I think may have been causing my
problems. After I changed the registry permissions, I noticed that AdWatch
line and experimented some more. Perhaps I needed to turn it off before I
tried deleting the McAfee stuff from the registry.

Dean,
Turn off "System Restore", accessories\system tools\system restore
settings, then make your modifications. I prefer to do this in safe mode
myself.
Also I recall a setting in Adaware which prevents some start up
modifications, I believe it is called Ad watch, if you are running it you
can turn that off as well.
HTH,
Hal Seabolt

Subject: [PCBUILD] MSCONFIG problem; Deleting keys in the registry

XP Professional

I removed McAfee "internet security," but some remnants remain in the
MSCONFIG startup. Unchecking them does no good, as they come back. The
items referred to just come back, which causes the system to boot slowly, as

it cannot find these things. Then it goes into its unhappy routine because
I had a non-standard startup, etc.

My main question is: how do I get stuff out of the msconfig startup list?

I downloaded the free version of Registry Mechanic, which found six bad
registry entries that corresponded to the msconfig items. I told Registry
Mechanic to delete them, and it thought that it did, but another Registry
Mechanic scan showed that they were still there and offered to delete them
again. And again.

So, I went into regedit and found the keys and deleted them, but they come
right back. (Even before I leave regedit.)

Second question (related to the first?): how do I delete the registry keys
so that they do not come back?

There are options to change permissions in regedit, but I don't really want
to mess with them, not knowing what I am doing.

Thanks,

Dean Kukral
