It is unreasonable to give a definitive answer for every motherboard ever
built, but the reasonable answer is that you can use both at the same time.

PS: I am using both on the ASUS A8N32-SLI that I am using to write this

Subject: [PCBUILD] Sata and Pata?
Hi all,
Question
On a motherboard that has both SATA and PATA buses can you have
devices on both at the same time or do you have to run one or the other?
I'm planning on upgrading to a ASUS P5B motherboard which has both,
and I want to transfer my DVD burner to the new motherboard and the
burner is ATA not SATA. I plan on upgrading to a SATA HD. So
hopefully will be able to run both buses at the same time. If not I
will have to update my burner to SATA another 100 bucks or so.
Thanks
