Tom,

The tone stays there as long as the repeater is transmitting.  Even after 
the carrier drops, it's still there.  The radios only scan when a carrier is 
present, so once you find the right tone (signified by a beep), you simply 
press the OK button, which is the menu joystick for the TH-F6A.  Btw, this 
is all explained in the manual.
