It seems to me the prohibition in the bible against drunkenness and gluttony
revolves around the responsibility an individual owes to himself and to
others. In America not enough emphasis is placed on individual
responsibility regarding the use of alcohol and food. I think the
temperance movement had a lot to do with the shaping of attitudes toward
alcohol. Rather than stressing responsible use of the product, they focused
on abstinents. If children learned how to eat and drink responsibly we
would have fewer obese and alcoholics in our society. Didn't St. Paul say
neither should do well in his kingdom. I thought he lumped them both
together with the homosexuals and liars and a group of other kinds of
perversions. I personally think if one eats or drinks for any other reason
than to satisfy a natural hunger or thirst one is perverting the original
intent of the natural use of food or drink.
