Hi Kathy,
All you have to do is to call the airlines and tell them you need visual 
assistance.  The travel agent doesn't know as much about it as they think. 
The airlines have been very good to help me and they have not forgotten me 
either.  If they want to know what is visual assistance, just tell them the 
airlines that you need someone to take you to your gate, meet you at your 
gate on the other end, and to help you find your luggage at the end of your 
trip.  You are not required to ride that wheelchair unless you want to do 
it!  I hope this helps.  Praying for your dad, keep us posted when you can.
