I have never 'willed away' an itch. Usually in my case there is grain 
involved as in grain fed meat, a gluten accident or eating moldy fruit.
Certain nuts and cinnamon cause itchiness for me too. Some 
toothpastes and most mouth washes contain grains and/or nut 
containing ingredients like cocomide.
So I would look into allergens if I were you.
Also, the best thing to take away itchiness is an ice pack.
It is the only thing that works for me.
