Brian,
I have been called to bid on stuff at the G for the last 20 years. Lots
of invitations, no weddings. Most recent was a year or so ago when a
Belgian crew of climbers thought that they could repaint the place for
like $20,000 in 2 weeks. The first thing that they did was call the
painter's union and offer to teach them to hang from ropes in exchange
for a few painters out of the hall. Not such a smart move. I talked them
into running away. They thought it would be their intro to the American
market. What the G wanted was a really quick-cheap paint job for some
sort of museum program related milestone... it had nothing much to do
with conservation or repair or finding a solution to the long-term
issues w/ the cracking concrete. This was previous to the current
restoration effort. If we live long enough we will see it restored once
again w/in the next 20 years.
