TAMAR
[TAY mur] (palm)-the name of three women and a city in the Bible:
1. The widow of Er and Onan, sons of Judah (Gen 38:6-30; Matt 1:3; Thamar,
KJV). According to the law of LEVIRATE MARRIAGE, Judah's third son, Shelah,
should have married Tamar; their first child would have been regarded as
his brother's and would have carried on his name. However, Judah withheld
his third son from marrying Tamar. Undaunted, Tamar disguised herself as a
harlot and offered herself to Judah. Twin sons, Perez and Zerah, were born
of their union. Judah and Tamar became ancestors of Jesus through Perez
(Matt 1:3).
2. The lovely daughter of David by Maacah and sister of Absalom (2 Sam
13:1-22,32; 1 Chron 3:9). Tamar was raped by her half-brother Amnon. She
fled to Absalom, who plotted revenge. Two years later Absalom got his
revenge for Tamar by arranging Amnon's murder.
3. Absalom's only surviving daughter, possibly named after his sister Tamar
(2 Sam 14:27).
4. A place southwest of the Dead Sea (Ezek 47:19; 48:28).
