Hi Colin,

You may want to change your settings from characters to words. to do this 
temporarily do a JAWS key plus the number 2 on the top row. this will toggle 
you through characters words or characters and words.

As far as, controlling which text on the screen is spoken when, you will 
probably need to make a set of JAWS frames. This is of course assuming that 
your screen reader is JAWS.
