Hi List,
As concerns noise, for years, I had all sorts of odd buzzing on the AM band.
Much above broadcast AM, there wasn't any problem, but on the AM band, the
problem was significant. Last summer we had a massive reconstruction of our
house. At this time, an item that I never would have thought of had given
up the ghost when the new and more powerful electric service was installed.
I bet that few of you might guess what it was.
...well it was an old hard wired doorbell. The thing began buzzing and
sputtering almost immediately after the electrician put in the new
electrical service and when he realized what had happened, he pulled the
breaker for the part of the house that controlled that door bell box and he
replaced the door bell. Now I have absolutely no buzzing or humming at all
on the AM radio band. This problem had been around for at least 20 years
and even my attempt to localize the problem with a transistor radio proved
fruitless. Apparently, the door bell box which was hooked into the old
wiring may have been transmitting the interference throughout the house
wiring--making isolation a problem.

I know a guy who had noise like that and it turned out to be something going
bad in the refrigerator, that's the problem living in an apartment building,
1 of the numerous problems anyway, it could come from any one of a hundred
things in how ever many apartments and there is likely nothing you can do
about it unless you can track the source to your own.
