Yes, the free version of AVG is substandard, in my opinion.  I currently use 
Norton Internet Security suite, but TrendMicro's products are good, and 
although I haven't tried them, the Casperski Labs anti-virus program has a 
high reputation.

I think McAfee is also good, it is used by many IT departments.  But, I 
can't recommend them because their interface is not accessible, at least in 
their latest security suite.
