HEARTBURN
by Charlene Friesen
Heartburn. Everyone suffers from occasional indigestion. Nothing a few
crackers or a tablet of Rolaids can't ease. But have you ever experienced
spiritual heartburn, that unrelenting hunger for God's truth that no antacid
can diminish? Does your heart burn for God?
There are times when our faith burns brightly, and there are times when our
faith wavers under trials or doubt. At such times we need a miracle to boost
our faith.
Flip through the pages of the New Testament and read of countless miracles:
forgiveness of sins, a healing touch, an emotional restoration or a renewal
of faith. There was no sin or setback that Jesus would not address or
rectify. These signs and wonders renewed an unwavering faith or solidified a
new faith in many people and were central to their growth in God.
Jesus' miracles still challenge and encourage today. I recently heard the
story of how members of a youth group were encouraged to bring a friend to
church. Not just any friend, but one who would be the least likely to become
a Christian. Over 600 "unlikely" kids attended youth group and in excess of
200 became Christians. Each of those miracles will be an anchor of faith and
testimony, one that will inspire again and again.
Miracles are defining moments. Think back to a God-inspired moment in your
life. Most likely your very being hung upon that miracle: the truth of God's
divine nature, your salvation, the accuracy of the Scriptures or your
purpose in life. That miracle defined who you were in Christ. Now take the
miracle and run God's race.
Continue to pray for additional miracles along the way. Whatever seems
humanly impossible; whatever situation needs God's timely intervention -
tell Him your heart is ready for His repeat business! Jesus will deliver.
It's part of His name -- "He who is able to do immeasurably more than all we
ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us" (Ephesians
3:20).
Define who you are by living in the divine. Go ahead, ask for a miracle and
get a serious case of heartburn. Now that's relief!
