The word I was looking for showed up on a website I was reading recently.
It is spelled genre or G E N R E and pronounced is if it were spelled as
jondra as in Saundra. Here is the definition.

Genre. n. 1 Type; class. 2. a A category of artistic
composition marked by a distinctive style, form, or content, esp.
a style of painting concerned with depicting scenes and subjects
of common everyday life. b A distinctive class or category of
literary composition. Fr. OFr., kind Lat. genus.
