Clone the drive using a boot CD if you can.
(This keeps Windows in the dark about what you are "up to"...)

NEVER let the system boot with both the old and new drives
connected in their original positions!!!


Put the new one installed where the old one was (electrically)
first. Very important...
Keep the old one out of the system until you get the new one
running correctly... It is where you will "fall back to" if and/or
when something goes wrong...

Be carefull with your jumper settings, and drive positions while
doing all this...   Good luck, I do it all the time, (on simple MB
IDE ports...
