A friend of mine had this done to him. It can be a close call or not
very pleasant. His wife won't let him go pheasant hunting any more. He
recently had a major cornonary episode and survived... not sure what his
wife thinks of that coming up on Valentines Day. A pheasant w/ birdshot
at short range is turned into chopped feathers. I'll never forget the
one flying away from me that I got about 6 feet out. Amazing how the
bird is already moving away as fast as it can go and you let loose then
there is blood & feathers with wings still flapping in a twisted dive
with a neck stuck out there and it is moving even faster now before it
hits the ground and bounces... sort of thud thud bounces in the dirt
till it gets slowed down by some dry weeds and the dog runs over and
grabs it.

My stepfather, who did have military experience later in life, is
supposed to have been getting into a PU truck w/ a loaded shotgun after
a hunt and blew his friend's ear off. Leastways that was why despite our
always having guns to play with when we were kids we were told why we
never went hunting like grandpa who was brought up on an Iowa sheep farm.
