In my experience, when it says the driver exists, it is not always the
correct driver.  If the correct or a better driver is found, Windows will
take the better.  I would start with the chipset driver and give that a
shot.  Depending on what drivers you are getting the yellow exclamation
point(driver not found) for, this also might resolve that problem.  Also,
like Mark said, you will need XP SP1 for USB 2.0 but if you not have that
installed, the usb ports will still run at 1.1 speeds.

Is the Win XP disk pre-SP1?  USB 2 needs SP1 to work correctly if memory 
serves.
