Bizarre Case at Bundung Magistrates' Court
Friday 17th February 2006
By Sarata Jabbie-Dibba
A middle-aged businessman, Pa Ousman Dumbuya, who claimed to have been
defrauded of D200,000 this week testified before Magistrate Moses
Richard at the Bundung Magistrates' Court.
In his testimony, Dumbuya informed the court that he was on 12 December
2005, coming from Lamtoro Clinic where he went to pick up his wife and
children when he met the accused.
Dumbuya added: "He asked me whether I trust God. He told me to buy two
candles and a tin of sardine. When I took the tin of sardine to him, he
started using his prayer beads. Moments later, when he opened the tin of
sardine a padlock tied with red, white and black thread plus a finger
ring was found in the tin."
According to Dumbuya, the accused, Babucarr Ceesay, thereafter told him
that the padlock and the finger ring were used by witches to enable him
become magical.
"He then asked me to pay D200,000. When I gave him this, he told me to
give out a Holy Quran as charity and 33 kilos of steak for the witches
as charity. I told him I don't know any witch but he nevertheless gave
me the money for this charity."
Dumbuya further told the court that after doing all what he was asked
to, he went with the accused to some distant bushes.
"While in the bushes I heard voices calling names and the accused then
told me I cannot get gold as promised earlier because the leader of the
devils was not around.
"He then told me to go for my two suitcases containing my clothes. When
I took the suit cases to the bush, the suit cases immediately became
full of money. One contained CFA and other Dalasis. Thereafter, he told
me to pay the devils D100, 000 which I couldn't then afford. He said
failure to make the ordered payment would penalise me from receiving any
of the piles of money in the suitcases.
I then requested him to refund my money which he could not."
The case continues next week.
