Although the 480 won't give you readability readings, it can give you 
S-meter readings.  To make that happen, press the Menu button and 
turn the channel knob until you hear "48."  Then press the Up or Down 
button until you hear "62."  Exit from the menus by pressing the Menu 
button again.  Now, pressing the PF key will cause the signal 
strength to be read out.  For anything up to and including an S9, the 
report is read in S units.  For anything above S9, the DB above S9 is read out.

Incidentally, you can still get your frequency read out by pressing 
the Enter key twice.
