I think I know the contractor who did the work. Despite the possible lack of
English, and despite the fact the mechanics may not have had any idea of the
cultural importance of the building (not their culture) they may have been good
mechanics. It' s the owner and the bossman you have to be concerned about.

Citrus based cleaners are used to remove adhesives from marble.Possibly a citrus
based poultice will dissolve the citrus based oil?
Otherwise, how about a degreaser?
Seems like an odd thing for millenialists to do.
Like, why not hit stop signs or fire hydrants?
Glad to hear they were from Illinois and not Ohio.
