Hi Jerry.
Yes, the IC751A was just an updated version of the original IC751. The
differences were largely in the components that they used in the VCO, and
changes that they made in the CW filter arrangement. If you are going to
be a phone operator, you probably wouldn't notice the difference, but if CW
is your thing, the 751A was significantly better than the original
751. That radio had a tremendous receiver, but the original radio was
plagued with VCO problems because of a poor choice of capacitors, and that
was the reason mine kept going back for repair--the VCO kept letting go,
and when it did, everything sounded like you had really really bad aurora
conditions.
Incidentally, the Icom R71A shortwave reciver was prone to the same
problem, and my R71A has been back once to have the VCO reworked.
