If you save your initial subscription info for the lists you subscribe to, I 
think you would find references to how to do these commands.  They do vary 
from list to list, though.

On the lists I administer, I place a lot of the relevant commands at the 
bottom of each message, although that admittedly consumes some bandwidth.
