There is a UT102 chip that is used in the 706, 703, and 718 tranceivers,
______But Not_____ the european version of the 718, which I believe is
called the IC78,/I know there's no place to plug it in that xmitter by
bitter experience.)  But it works in the rigs mentioned above, and probably,
as well, in some other Icom tranceivers which is available for something
under $60.
Won't give you all the menu and reading info you'll need, but it is _Very
