Jeff,

The problem you describe has nothing to do with cycling the
battery.  There's a menu setting that controls whether or not the
radio turns off after inactivity.  You can set it to 0, 30 (the
default) or 60 minutes.  If it doesn't shut off, you probably changed
that setting and didn't know it.
