I picked up a used Uniden SC150, which doesn't cope with trunk systems, but 
it's more or less just to play with for a little while until I decide if I 
want to spend the big bucks for something better. I figured that for $30, I 
couldn't go very far wrong and it's in beautiful condition. Just the WX 
freqs alone make it a good weather radio, albeit without the alarm function 
(which I probably wouldn't use, anyhow).

Hi Walt, I think if you are in Clear Water they've got a trunked system.
Florida is full of those, but then again so is Michigan, so that is
something to keep in mind.  Have you purchased a scanner yet?
