I haven't been in amateur radio for 40 years, but my 30'th anniversary
will be in June of 2008.

An uncle first turned me on to radio back in the 1960's. He was one of
those guys who built every kind of shortwave receiver kit on the planet.
Interestingly enough he never got his ham ticket. He gets the credit for
planting the seeds of my interest in radio.

I started shortwave listening in the mid 60's along with broadcast band
dxing. I got my ham ticket in June of 1978 and in retrospect I wish I got
it back in the mid 60's. Amateur radio is just as much fun and holds my
interest as strongly as it did in those beginner days of the late 70's.

I started on two meters with a used Drake TR22. It had 6 crystal controlled
channels with a mighty one watt of power. My first hf rig was a loner heath
HW8. With that rig I made my first cw contacts. The antenna was a 15 meter
dipole in the attic. In 1979 I upgraded to general and have been one ever
since. One of my plans for the near future is to get my extra.

My interest in radio has aided me in lots of other facets of my life. It
led me into the commercial broadcast industry and at the present time I am
one of the owners of WODI Radio in Brookneal Virginia.

Amateur radio is the greatest avocation in the world.
