The Ingredient Checker is a tool for checking products that aren't listed in our food SmartList. Many ingredients, like modified food starch and hydrolyzed plant protein may or may not contain gluten depending on what the manufacturer used during the manufacturing process.  By entering the ingredients of a product, you can see if they MIGHT HAVE gluten in them.

However, even when all of the ingredients LOOK like they're gluten free, a product may still be contaminated with gluten because of cross contamination or because flour was used during the manufacturing process and wasn't declared on the label. Only the manufacturer of a product can tell you for sure whether it contains gluten.

The information in our Ingredient Checker is researched by Clan Thompson - unlike the information about products in our SmartList which is collected directly from each manufacturer. We research ingredient information ourselves because there is no better way to collect that information. Ingredients may be manufactured by any number of companies and there is no easy way to determine which companies a food manufacturer deals with. However, there are rules and regulations about how ingredients may be manufactured and, by knowing the regulations, it's possible to determine what ingredients contain.

The new INGREDIENT CHECKER checks around 350 ingredients - and we'll be adding more ingredients with each update. This tool is currently available only on the food SmartList for Windows PCs and the SmartList for Mac OS X.

And, in case you wondered...Oryzanol is an ingredient derived from rice and Teff is a cereal grain from a grass grown in Africa. Both are gluten free.

In addition to adding our new "Ingredient Checker" function, we've updated information on around 945 items and added about 612 new items to the SmartList. New companies include Dietz & Watson, Old Cape Cod, S & W's, Caroline's, Dunkin' Donut's, Hunt's, Healthy Choice and Banquet. Genisoy and Newman's Own have increased the size of their lists. Our new SmartList contains 4,4442 items, including 1,423 items for celiac vegetarians.
