oh, we are talking about the quarter inch headphone jack then, not the 1
eightth inch external speaker, or extention speaker jack on the radio.
As was said already, if you plug a quarter inch jack into the head phone
jack on the head of the rig, and then try to drive a regular 8 ohm speaker
with it, the audio will indeed be very low.
There are a few reasons:
first of all, the headphone jack has an attenuator built into it so that the
audio level is drastically reduced from that of the main audio amp output,
second, the impedance is around 32 ohms, so an 8 ohm speaker plugged in will
be getting about a quarter of the appropriate power.
That is why there is an extention speaker jack on the radio itself.
The 1 eighth inch jack on the rig itself is 2 conducter, not three...the
headphone jack is indeed 3.
