Hi.
I don't recall what the Icom IC821 uses for a voice synthesizer, though I'm
pretty sure that it could use one. But, I do know about the Icom
IC271A. It uses the EX310 voice synthesizer, which is all but impossible
to get unless you already have one in the radio. I sold my Icom IC271H and
Ic471A when I lost my vision because I searched high and low and could not
find one of those voice synthesizers for sale anywhere.
Also, bear in mind that while it is not an accessibility issue, the IC271A
is one of the radios that has the suicide lithium battery that causes the
radio to lose its identity when the battery goes flat--an automatic return
to mother Icom for reprogramming and a new battery. If you do procure one
of these radios with the voice synthesizer, it might be worth the $59.00 to
order one of the replacement "brains" from Piexx which will eliminate this
problem once and for all.
If you can find a '271 with the voice synthesizer, it is a good radio,
especially after the replacement ROM unit is purchased and installed.
