It sounds as if he is learning.  Learning the hard way, of course, but
that's ok.  It sounds like to me that he is making some progress in spite of
the circumstances he has gotten into through different relationships.  In
many ways, all you mentioned in your message sounds pretty good.  It
certainly could be a lot worse and it is never easy on the parents.
