Well, there is one thing that does affect your desktop. There is, in XP, a
desktop cleanup wizzard. It is only supposed to work if it is enabled, and
only on infrequently used items. It puts them in an unused desktop folder,
if memory serves. I doubt that has affected those shortcuts though.
My guess is something caused a system restore. I just went to Detroit to
service a guy's PC because he lost his Outlook shortcut.
