Hi Group,
I have a users HP Pavilion a1206n that has started to really baffle me. The unit came to me with problems from software my user's son downloaded, and really clogged up the machine.
The machine has as an operating system XP Home SP-2 with all patches applied.
I suggested that we create an account for her son that would not have administrator rights to limit the ability to load software. I created a second administrator type account with a password, then tried to log in to that account from the welcome screen. The machine responds as you would expect, except that the password box is black and disabled, so you cannot enter a password. The keyboard is not functional at the login screen. Caps lock and the numeric key do not function, either.
OK, so I go into the original account and do a switch user to get to the second administrator account. That gives me the ability to log in and I can enter the password and get into the account. However, once in the other account, I have no use of the keyboard. All that works there is the mouse.
I can restore the machine from the original source which is on the split hard drive, but that would put us in the place of having to scramble to find all the software that was originally installed.
Does anyone have any ideas where in the registry these type of settings are controlled? Any suggestions to get this box to work properly again?
Thanks,
Paul Pullen
